An Earthworm in the Deepest Sea (LIII)

40" x 60" - Soft pastel & acrylic on birch panel 2022

There once was a worm
who strived for more
he was of the earth
and burrowed deep
without stopping
And eventually
Found the inner sea
away from the sunlight
Deepest recesses of earth
Foreign bodied but not helpless
he gilded below
deeper and deeper
gravity took
until his weight
felt monstrous
Mundane no more
Though territories unknown
another sphere
where did earth go
he was a worm of the sea
Still deeper and deeper
a current swept him
Steadfast in its direction
until centred within.
